ABSTRACT

Sexual violence against children in Indonesia shows a concerning upward trend, with the number of victims reaching 9,588 in 2022. West Sumatra is recorded as one of the provinces with the highest number of victims, and Koto Tangah District has the highest incidence of child sexual violence in Padang City. Early sex education is one of the prevention strategies that can be implemented among elementary school-age groups. This study aims to determine the effect of audiovisual-based sex education on the knowledge and attitudes of elementary school students in the prevention of sexual violence.
This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest with control group approach. The sample consisted of 96 fifth-grade elementary school students in Balai Gadang Village, Koto Tangah District, Padang City, divided into an intervention group (n=48) and a control group (n=48), selected using purposive sampling technique. The intervention consisted of the screening of two sex education videos produced by UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPPA) as part of the GN-AKSA campaign. Knowledge and attitudes were measured using a questionnaire adopted from Neherta, which had been modified and tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test for within-group changes and the Mann-Whitney test for between-group differences.
The results showed a significant improvement in knowledge in the intervention group (p<0.001) but not in the control group (p=0.102). Similarly, regarding attitudes, a significant improvement was observed in the intervention group (p<0.001) but not in the control group (p=0.642). The Mann-Whitney test revealed significant differences in knowledge gain scores (p<0.001) and attitude gain scores (p<0.001) between the two groups. Audiovisual-based sex education was proven effective in improving the knowledge and attitudes of elementary school students regarding sexual violence prevention. Audiovisual media is recommended as a health education method that can be integrated into school health programs.
